George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces programme on Channel 4 to showcase bathing machine built in Whitstable
00:01, 07 October 2015
A unique bathing machine thought to be the first built in the country for a century is to star on national television tomorrow night.
The shed on wheels, built by Whitstable-based woodwork firm Moosejaw Woodworks Limited, is to feature on the George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces show on Channel 4.
Bosses at the Beresford Road-based firm were commissioned to build the shed – which features its own built-in sauna – by Margate-based Dom Bridges.
Father-of-two Jacques Raymond, 37, has worked at Moosejaw for five years and spent three months building the sauna.
He said: “We were talking about it for a really long time and had lots of meetings but the work itself took three months.
“It’s not actually completely finished yet and it’s going to go on Margate beach.
“The architect came up with the idea of what it wanted to look like and then we had production meetings and there was a lot of working out to do.”
When completed, the sauna is set to feature on Margate beach where people will be able to pay to sit in the sauna and experience the bathing machine.
Before that, it will feature on Channel 4’s George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces show on Thursday.
The show – presented by the architect and television presenter himself – explores the world of small builds where people turn tiny spaces into places to live, work and play.
Mr Raymond, who has worked in woodwork for 15 years, met Mr Clarke when he visited Kent for filming.
He added: “He is very nice.
"Hopefully it will come across well – I have not been on telly before!" - Jacques Raymond
“He was very friendly and chatted to everyone and made an effort to introduce himself to everyone.
“He is always very positive and he seemed to like it. Hopefully it will come across well – I have not been on telly before!
“The sauna’s made of all sorts of things – mostly timber, the chassis is steel and it’s got an aluminium drawbridge.
“It will live down on Margate beach and they will tow it out with a tractor to the beach for people to pay for time to use it.”
George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces starts at 8pm on Thursday on Channel 4.
