Explosion on West Beach in Whitstable after suspected wartime munition detonated

A bomb disposal unit was called to a seafront beauty spot following a report of a suspected wartime munition.
Residents reported on social media hearing a controlled explosion at West Beach in Whitstable shortly after midday today.
The coastguard notified the explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) of a report of a suspected ordnance on the town's shore shortly before 12.15pm yesterday.
Herne Bay coastguard rescue team were sent, at low water, to gather information about the device.
The area was cordoned off today and the EOD carried out a controlled detonation shortly after midday.
People have previously been warned not to move ordnance or flares, but to call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
