Whitstable: Co-op to offer free tea after leaflet spelling blunder

12:00, 13 July 2016

Red-faced Co-op bosses have promised to put the ‘t’ back into Whitstable after misspelling the town’s name 10 times in a promotional leaflet.

The handout, which is little more than A4-sized, was posted through letterboxes across the town.

The embarrassing error was posted on social media after seeing the word “Whistable” plastered on both sides in different fonts and colours.

The leaflet includes money-off coupons when spending £10 or more on groceries in “Whistable” Co-op stores.

It even fails to maintain orthographic consistency with Whitstable hanging on to the elsewhere elusive ‘t’ in one section.

Nick Evans, 56, of Douglas Avenue said: “Could we have our missing t back please?

“The Co-op needs to hire someone who has good knowledge of town names. A big Ooops indeed.

“Something as basic as a town name should always be checked – we are the only Whitstable in the world!”

But the company has held its hands up to the gaffe and embarked on a campaign to provide free tea to make amends.

Co-op spokesman Craig Brownsell said: “To make up for the lack of ‘t’ in our recent adverts we’re going to put the ‘t’ back in to Whitstable by giving away free tea at our store.

“We’ll announce how you can bag a free cuppa soon.”

Mr Evans has since expressed his approval on Twitter, he posted: "Hats off to the Co-op who will be offering free cups of tea at Whitstable store soon for missing T in town name!"
