Developers have been given the go-ahead to open a new Costa on the outskirts of Whitstable - despite scores of objections from concerned residents.

The controversial bid for the drive-thru and sit-in cafe at Chestfield roundabout has been rubber-stamped by the city council.

With permission granted, Motor Fuel Limited, which runs the Shell service station off the Thanet Way, will build the Costa on scrubland neighbouring the garage.

Nine jobs are forecast to be created as a result of the new business, which will boast 22 parking spaces and operate from 5am until 11pm seven days a week.

A previous application was turned down by the council two years ago.

But with applicants going back to the drawing board, their tweaks to the plan have seen them earn the seal of approval at the second time of asking.

More than a dozen objections were lodged, with the proposal igniting concerns over increased litter, traffic, noise and smell.

Residents stressed how the area is already brimming with busy commercial outlets, such as McDonald's and KFC, and raised fears over potential lack of sleep due to the proposed opening hours.

Yet, in determining the scheme, the council concluded the cafe would have "low impact" on nearby homes.

The authority also believes the new site will not cause increased traffic problems on the Thanet Way as most customers will link their trips with a visit to the neighbouring petrol pumps.

The developers say they are “committed to tackling litter” and will ensure daily patrols are carried out to collect rubbish.

As part of the proposals, the hand car wash which currently operates from behind the petrol station is set to be removed and replaced with two jet washes.
