A councillor was lucky to escape serious injury after his car was smashed in a crash with a lorry.

Cllr Neil Baker says he was heading to County Hall in Maidstone when a HGV pulled out and hit his silver Mazda on the M2.

The lorry "caught the back" of his car - causing it to spin across the carriageway towards the verge.

Cllr Baker's vehicle smashed into a bush and was left with a buckled bonnet.

The incident happened yesterday shortly before 8.20am between Brenley Corner and the A249 Maidstone junction.

Cllr Baker is a county councillor for Whitstable East and Herne Bay West, and also a Canterbury city councillor who represents Tankerton.

Luckily, he escaped with his life and told how there was "no harm done to me - not even a scratch".

"A lorry decided to pull out into the outside lane to overtake another lorry without, I assume, realising I was already there," he said.

"It caught the back of my car and spun me across towards the verge.

"I am thankful that the police provided me with the lorry driver's insurance details, although as the company is based in the Baltics I don't expect a quick conclusion to that.

"It's not the most enjoyable stretch of Kent countryside to spend three hours standing on, awaiting vehicle recovery.

"But at least there was decent mobile signal and I could catch up on emails - small mercies!"
