Protestors began the slow march from the RNLI station to the West Beach tennis courts.

They were met by Charlotte Cornell, a representative for Ms Duffield, who received the letter.

The group asked those marching to observe social distancing rules and to wear face masks.

The march comes as people have flocked to the coast to bask in the sunshine across Kent today.

XR have called on Ms Duffield to "tell the truth to the government".

The letter claims government "inaction" over climate change is a "threat to civilisation".

It states: "The world is heating and the breakdown of our climate has begun. Extreme weather events are having devastating impacts on agriculture and destroying homes, costing taxpayers billions and leaving millions of people in need of humanitarian aid.

"Rising temperatures, rising sea levels and droughts will render vast tracts of land uninhabitable through flooding and desertification, putting food supplies at risk.

"Society will move into civil unrest and ultimately war, raising the terrifying possibility of societal collapse."
