The Horsebridge Arts Centre in Whitstable has closed its galleries after suffering a "significant" leak from a bathroom.

Water poured from the men's toilets last night due to problems with the cisterns, flooding the downstairs galleries along with some offices and a store room.

The galleries are showcasing an exhibition of work by children and young adults from Forge Cottage Art Club.

But centre manager Liz Daone said: "We don't think there has been any damage to artwork - we've taken off the ones that were at risk.

"The water was coming down the walls. It was a significant leak, but it has now been fixed.

"We're now waiting for it to dry out a bit and signed off by an electrician.

"We can't turn the lights on in the galleries, so they are closed. But we hope and expect the galleries will be open again tomorrow.

"We apologise for any disappointment caused to people who were hoping to visit."

The Horsebridge's half-term children's workshops and cinema screening are still going ahead today as planned.
