A huge exotic plant growing on Tankerton roundabout has caught the eye of residents.

The American aloe, or Agave americana, is usually nothing but a mass of spiky leaves. But following the heatwave, the plant in Tankerton Road has produced a huge flower stalk.

Karen Lane, of Bellevue Road in Whitstable, said: “It looks wonderful – I do recommend going to have a look. It’s as tall as the lamppost – my husband thinks it’s about 25 to 30ft.”
