A high street in Whistable has been nominated for an award at this year's Great British High Street Awards (GBHSA).

Tankerton High Street is one of 28 streets across England, Scotland and Wales to have been shortlisted for the 'Rising Star Award'.

The award celebrates "up and coming local communities who are on their way to transforming for the future", according to the GBHSA website.

On why Tankerton was nominated for an award, the GBHSA website says:

"Tankerton achieved a whole Christmas light display last year, bought and installed by local businesses, and also held a ‘Fairytale Fair’ for the children. This year will see their first ever Christmas lights switch on event.

"The town continues to work on its environment, securing funding to build twelve new planters on the high street, filled with high pollinators to help the local bee and insect population.

"Businesses are actively encouraged to maintain their shopfronts, keeping weeds at bay and removing litter, which all adds to the destination appeal."

The street, in the suburb of Whistable, is up against competition from London, Cheshire, Pembroke, Castle Douglass and many others.

The winner will be annouced in November, when they will find out if they have won a prize of £15,000.
