The boss of a Whitstable chippy voted the best takeaway in the county has revealed the secrets behind its success.

Ossie's Fish Bar, which also has branches in Sturry, Greenhill and Sittingbourne, opened in the high street in 2015.

Ossie Altun, who runs the shops, says he is "delighted" to be voted the county’s best by KentOnline readers.

More than 2,700 people took part in the poll, with 22% backing Ossie's as Kent's top takeaway.

"I want to say thank you very much to all our local providers for the fish and to our customers," he said.

"Our motto is: 'Good service, good value, great food'.

"I have been serving food all my life and like to use a local product which is high quality."

Ossie’s is a family-run business which has been in Kent for 20 years and now has seven shops across the county.

The Faversham branch was the first to open - with Whitstable being the most recent addition.

Mr Altun has says choosing to focus on what they do best is key to their success.

"Our aim is not to mix fish and chips with kebabs or pizza like other stores do," he said.

"We believe if you are good at one thing, you concentrate on that, and we focus on fish and chips.

"We cook the fish on the grill if required as well to make it healthier."

But Mr Altun would not disclose his secret recipe to make the fish "crispy".

He added: "The important thing is our customers are happy.

"My brothers and their families help in all of the branches.

"My wife is a teacher and she comes in to help on evenings and weekends.

"It is lots of hard work from everyone which helps to keep the quality. Hopefully, when I retire, one of our family members will take over."
