Detectives have arrested a man on suspicion of burglary today after a car was taken from a Whitstable home.

A 24-year-old man from Gravesend was arrested and the Volkswagen Golf worth £10,000 was recovered after it activated automatic number plate recognition cameras in the town.

A report was made to police that an intruder had forced a window to gain access and taken the car keys from a house in the Lucerne Drive area of Seasalter between 9am on Friday and 4pm on Sunday.

Acting detective sergeant Richard Allen urged residents to store keys safely, especially if going away.

He said: "We believe the keys to the car had been left on a table by the front door.

"Nothing else was taken during the burglary, which suggests the offender was targeting the car."

He issued further advice to homeowners to keep burglars at bay, urging everyone to make sure cash, keys and expensive items are not left visible from the outside of your home and to double-lock uPVC doors and windows.

He also encourages the use of timer switches on lights and radios to make it look like someone is home, keep garden gates locked and boundaries secure and to lock sheds and garages because bikes, tools and garden items can be stolen or used to break into homes.
