Mum arrested as abandoned baby found outside Co-op in Whitstable
11:00, 04 January 2017
A teenage mum has been arrested after allegedly abandoning her baby outside a supermarket.
Police were called to the Co-op in Canterbury Road, Whitstable, after the youngster was discovered in a pram at about 6.20pm last night.
As temperatures plummeted, officers searched the area for the 18-year-old mum, who had last been seen outside the store.
She was found soon after and arrested in connection with the incident.
Police spokesman Natalie Hardy said officers were alerted by a caller who had found an “unaccompanied child” at the supermarket.
The mum remains in custody, while the baby is understood to be well and being looked after.
