Police have released CCTV of a man trying the doors of parked cars in Whitstable after a number of vehicles were broken into.

Officers received three reports of vehicle interference overnight last Thursday and Friday night in Mariners View.

A small amount of loose change and sunglasses were stolen from a Volvo XC90 in Major Close.

A Renault Scenic parked in Major Close was searched although nothing was stolen and attempts were made to gain entry to several cars parked in nearby Speedwell Road.

Sergeant Martin Williams said: “It appears that someone was trying the doors of cars parked on driveways in the area to see if they were insecure and to see if any valuables were on view.

“We are urging people to be extra vigilant and if they see anyone acting suspiciously around vehicles to call us on 101 or 999 if a crime is in progress.

“We would also like to remind people not to leave valuables in their vehicles as these can be an open invitation to opportunist thieves, and - just as important - to leave their cars secure at all times.”

The break-ins happened across two nights last week.

Anyone who recognises the CCTV image or has information about the thefts is asked to contact the police on 01843 222289.
