Police have warned the elderly to be alert to the dangers of rogue traders - after a man was targeted by men claiming to be roofers.
The pensioner was approached by men who offered to carry out work on the roof of his property in Southwood Road, Whitstable last Saturday.
But the victim became suspicious when, having agreed a price, he was told the roof felting needed replacing and the price increased to nearly ten times the amount.
Yesterday officers arrested an 18-year-old man from Gillingham on suspicion of fraud by false representation in connection with the incident. He has been released pending further enquiries.
Detective Inspector Louise Murphy said: "During the wet and windy months, there’s a chance you may need repairs to your roof. So make sure the company you invite into your home is reputable, recommended, and you should not feel pressured into agreeing to services or goods straightaway on your doorstep.
"While many callers are genuine, rogue traders could charge you for work that wasn’t needed, or leave it unfinished until they receive more money, or even intimidate you.
"Elderly people are seen as easy targets, and may not feel confident in challenging a suspected fraud, so we ask residents to keep their eyes and ears open against rogue traders, not just for themselves, but for their elderly relatives and neighbours too.
