A popular fish and chip shop run by the same family for almost 62 years has suddenly closed with the owners' retirement.
V.C. Jones in Whistable first opened in 1962 but has shut its doors as those behind the business say they want to “focus on what’s really important in life”.
In a statement, the Jones family said: “We have spent this Christmas and New Year enjoying some rare and precious time together as a family.
“This time has enabled us to appreciate each other and to focus on what’s really important in life.
“As we enter our 62nd year of trading as a family, we have all decided that this is the perfect time to retire.
“This decision has surprised us probably as much as it has surprised you!”
The chippy – headed by Matt Jones – has been hugely popular in the town and further afield, even being named the UK’s third-best by TimeOut in 2022.
“Our doors will not be reopening.” the post continued.
“It has been a pleasure to serve generations of customers over these decades, and soon it will be our family’s turn to be on the other side of a counter!
“Wishing you all the very best, the Jones family.”
It is not yet known what will happen to the shop and if it will be taken over as a going concern.
Customers have expressed their shock and sadness at the closure.
Andy Waters, who has been buying from the shop for decades, wrote: “I am so pleased for you but saddened by your sudden decision.
“I will miss my jaunts down to Whitstable and getting my fish and chips from V.C Jones has always been a regular port of call over many years.
“Even my parents used to take me to the restaurant when I was little - I am now 72.
“Enjoy your retirement.”
Upset regular Di Readman said: “Oh my goodness - you made the best fish and chips in Whitstable.
“We will miss you along with the community, thank you for your service.
“We wish you a long and very happy retirement!”
The shop was known for its traditional method of frying in beef dripping rather than oil.
Long-term customer Christine Clark added: “What a shock, but I understand.
“I have been using V.C. Jones since I was 17 years old and I am now 74.
“I worked in Lloyd's Bank and a fish and chip lunch was always enjoyed.
“It’s the end of an era.”
The business’ website states: “Three generations of our family have been serving freshly cooked fish and chips to the residents and visitors of Whitstable since 1962.
“As one of the last fish and chip shops left in the south of England to fry in beef dripping, we are proud to maintain traditional pre-war traditions.”
