Sunseekers on Whitstable beach were left stunned after a car almost sank in the sea when its owner attempted to tow a boat into the water.
Beach users stared in disbelief yesterday after a man climbed out of his Land Rover to sit on the roof when his car was submerged.
It's believed he used the sea ramp to tow a boat into the water before the car started to sink.
He was left stranded for 30 minutes before friends used two Range Rovers to drag the car to safety.
"As the water kept rising he waited until the last minute before calmly getting out and sitting on the roof" - Nick Lillitos
Witness Nick Lillitos was having lunch at the Waterfront Club in Beach Walk when the action unfolded.
He said: "Everyone in the restaurant was shouting 'call the lifeguard, he's going to drown!'
"As the water kept rising he waited until the last minute before calmly getting out and sitting on the roof.
"Then two friends came and towed him to safety using two Range Rovers. It was all quite jovial while they waited for a mechanic they were sipping a pint of beer."
According to other witnesses the man managed to start the Land Rover's engine before driving off.
