Officers and paramedics attended the scene and two people were taken hospital for medical attention.

One of the drivers was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and he was taken into custody.

The road was closed while arrangements were made to recover the vehicles.

Witnesses say a number of emergency vehicles are at the scene, including ambulance crews.

One driver said: “There is a major traffic incident on A2990 between Swalecliffe and Greenhill roundabouts.

“Many police and ambulance vehicles are there. I have had to turn back as the road closed in both directions.”

The incident happened between the Westbrook Lane and Chestfield Road junctions.
