Motorists were stuck at a standstill for about 90 minutes after a three-vehicle crash on the A299 Thanet Way.
Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene near Yorkletts, between Whitstable and Faversham, on the coastbound side of the dual-carriageway.
Pictures show a badly damaged van and emergency crews surveying the hedge on the boundary of the major route.
Queues stretched back for about three miles to near Brenley Corner, at Faversham, before the route reopened at 12.30pm.
During the closure, drivers stuck in their vehicles close to the scene of the crash exited their vehicles to buy refreshments from the BP garage.
There were no serious injuries reported following the collision.
