Sir Terry Wogan was spotted in Whitstable Harbour this morning filming a new cookery show about the best of British food.

The veteran presenter and DJ, 76, tried oysters and whelks on a visit to the West Whelks store on the West Quay.

Irishman Wogan, who stopped hosting the Radio 2 breakfast show in 2010, was recording shots for a new BBC programme which is due to be broadcast on BBC2 later this year.

The Children in Need presenter has teamed up with London taxi driver Mason McQueen for the Terry And Mason’s Food Trip show.

Both were seen filming shots in the harbour this morning.

Derek West, of West Whelks, said: "They were filming a food programme. It was quite interesting and they had oysters and tried some whelks.

"I told them all about the whelks and oysters. He was quite happy down here - they enjoyed themselves.

"If he had come on a Saturday and Sunday it would have been packed out down here – everbody seems to like Whitstable."

Wogan was pictured with Angharad Purcell - an officer from the Kent and Essex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority - who was doing a shore patrol of the harbour when she bumped into him.

Jean West from West Whelks added: "Over the years we have had lots of celebrities here.

"Many years ago Bob Monkhouse was here about 40 years ago.

"People were walking through today and the suddenly realised it was Terry Wogan and out came the cameras."
