Sam Denly wants Herne Bay to start another good run after his side lost their unbeaten 10-game sequence to Ryman League, Division 1 South leaders Burgess Hill.

The positive and confident mood around Winch’s Field is continuing despite Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to the unbeaten visitors and Denly said: “We gave them a good run for their money.
“I thought we were unlucky and I was proud of the boys.

“Mark Lovell had a goal disallowed and I thought the free-kick for their goal was dubious, although we didn’t defend it well.”

The defeat dropped Bay to sixth, having played two more games than their
play-off rivals but Denly believes the chase for the final spot will go to the last game of the season.

Speaking before Whyteleafe won 1-0 at Burgess Hill on Wednesday Denly said: “Whyteleafe have still got to play Burgess Hill twice and finish at home to us.”

Having faced the West Sussex leaders, Bay now turn their attention to a trip to mid-table Corinthian Casuals at Tolworth on Saturday.

The Surrey club beat Carshalton Athletic 4-1 in midweek, two weeks after losing 6-1 at home to Hythe and Denly insists Bay can’t allow that sort of inconsistency to affect their preparation and mindset.

He said: “We will come unstuck if we do.”
