Whitstable Town didn’t do a lot wrong on Tuesday night - but they are still lacking a ruthless edge.

The team are playing well and picking up Southern Counties East League points - beating Rusthall 3-0 on Saturday before drawing 1-1 with Lydd in the week - but they are having enough chances to be even better.

“It was such a tough one,” said assistant boss Craig Coles after their midweek point.

“After the game we reflected on it as a management team and didn’t feel like we had put a foot wrong during the game.

“I know we conceded a goal, but with the amount of chances we created we should have probably been out of sight.

“Unfortunately it’s been the story of our season with regards to that, not taking the chances that we’ve created.

“In one way it is a good thing, we would be worried if we weren’t creating any chances at all and at that point we would be thinking we need to do something different.

“But at the moment we are creating the chances, it is just a case of trying to put those chances to bed, turning losses into draws and draws into wins.”

Harvey Smith put the Oystermen in front after 37 minutes of their Premier Division match against Lydd but the visitors hit back nine minutes after the restart.

Coles said: “We didn’t lose, which is a positive, and Lydd are a very good side.

“You have to give credit to them, they were outstanding, especially off the ball.

“You only have to see that they have beaten Faversham twice already, they are no mugs. From our point of view we played well, it is a case of trying to put the game to bed a little more often than we are at the moment.

“In the last nine games though we have won seven, drawn one and lost one, so actually when you look at it from that perspective it isn’t that bad, but it is just trying to turn a good performance like we had on Tuesday into better performances.

“The big thing for us, we are playing really well, it is just trying to continue that but for us the only thing that is missing is taking the chances that we are creating.

“That is it, when we do it we will end up turning potential draws into wins and potential losses into draws or wins.”

The win at Rusthall came with goals from Mikey Dalton, Josh Oliver - with a penalty - and Josh Williams late on.

“First half, again we created loads of opportunities to score and Dan Eason (the goalkeeper) has potentially ended up keeping us in the game just before half-time (with Town 1-0 up).

“They went through one-on-one with him and had they scored that going into half-time at 1-1 then all of a sudden it’s a different game. Eventually second half we took a couple of chances and got a well deserved win.”

Next up is a trip to eighth-placed Fisher on Saturday.

“They have been flying this season,” said Coles. “They are always very good - the start of this season they won seven or eight on the bounce.

“We always thought they would be up there or thereabouts but they might have taken some by surprise with their consistency. It will be a tough game.”
