Whitstable Town joint manager Danny Ward says his side must start turning draws into wins in Ryman League Division 1 South
00:01, 20 November 2014
Whitstable Town are turning into the draw specialists of Ryman League, Division 1 South and it’s a tag that joint-manager Danny Ward wants to quickly lose.
Last Saturday’s goalless draw at East Grinstead meant that the Oystermen have now drawn eight league matches this season – the highest number in the division.
Had they won just two of those games they would be up among the play-off challengers
now.
Ward said: “We should have won on Saturday and it was a pity we didn’t because we could have done with the three points.
“We’ve only let in two goals in the last two league games and we aren’t losing many matches but we need to be more clinical in front of goal.
“We are due to give someone a hiding soon and hopefully it will be this weekend.”
Whitstable are away to Walton & Hersham on Saturday, who last weekend won 2-1 at Hastings United. The previous Saturday, Hastings had beaten leaders Faversham 5-1.
Ward added: “It shows that in this league, anyone can beat anyone.
“I think Faversham, Burgess Hill and Folkestone will be the three teams going for the title and we are not far behind any of them but at the same time, we are not ready (to go up)
either.
“We are a work in progress and, although I want to win every game, there’s still work to do.”
Whitstable lost 3-1 on Tuesday night at Thamesmead Town in the Kent Reliance Senior Cup second round and Ward will be hoping that he doesn’t have the same injury problems this weekend that he had to contend with for the cup game.
He said: “At 9am I had my back four all sorted out but by 11am I had to bring in four different players because of injuries.
“Joe Kennett had to play after just getting back from a mate’s wedding in Jamaica, Ollie Gray had a bit of a hamstring and Jack Healey had played for the under-21s the night before but they all had to play, so it was hardly ideal.
“That said, although I wanted to win, this Saturday’s game is more important and hopefully the people who couldn’t play on Tuesday will be fit by then.”
Ward, though, will be without midfielder Scott Heard who is serving a one match suspension.
