A teenager was rushed to hospital in London late last night after suffering serious head injuries following a town centre disturbance.
An air ambulance was called to Herne Bay after the 18-year-old man was hurt in mysterious circumstances at about 11pm.
He was taken by road to King's College Hospital in London.
The incident took place at the lower end of the street, outside the Baby’s Room shop, which remained cordoned off by police this morning.
Witnesses heard the helicopter flying overhead and reported seeing the remains of a smashed beer bottle outside the shop today.
Ben Lawrence watched from his flat in Mortimer Street as the injured man was treated.
He said: "I didn't actually see what happened to the person involved but I saw the paramedics attending to a person right outside my flat.
"They were working on the patient for some time. I noticed all the lights outside about 12.10am and the ambulance didn't leave with the patient till about 12:45am.
"I hope they are OK."
Kent Police spokesman Scarlet Jones said inquiries are ongoing to establish how the man suffered his injuries.
But Kent Air Ambulance spokesman Jamie Cheshire said: "A male suffered a head injury after contact with a non-mechanical, man-made object.
“He was taken by Kent Ambulance to hospital, and a doctor from the air ambulance was also onboard.”
The owner of Baby's Room arrived to open the shop this morning at 10am and discovered the cordon.
She said: "I haven't got a clue what happened. I'm still waiting for the police to call me and let me know."
South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman Rich Airey said: "I can't confirm the circumstances of whether or not it was an assault.
"However I can report that an 18-year-old man had head injuries in Mortimer Street just after 11pm.
"We sent two ambulance crews and two cars to the scene, one of which was an air ambulance road team.
"The patient was assessed and treated at the scene, with injuries including a head injury.
"He was taken to the Kings College Hospital in London, with the air ambulance team helping us en-route."
