GILLINGHAM chairman Paul Scally begins the hunt for a new manager after failing to tempt Stan Ternent to stay at the club.

Mr Scally wants to have a replacement installed by Friday and says he already has some "excellent candidates" in the running.

Ternent was offered a new deal but turned down the chance to restore Championship football to Priestfield after discussions with the chairman over the weekend.

Mr Scally said: "It is with much regret that, despite putting forward what the club believes is an attractive package, we have been unable to persuade Stan Ternent to take the job of manager for the forthcoming season.

"The search now begins for a manager to work with us next season. I have some excellent candidates to see over the next two or three days."

One of those in the frame could be Ronnie Jepson, who assisted Ternent in so nearly masterminding the Gills’ survival.

"Ronnie has impressed me with his work since he joined us,” said Mr Scally.

"Whilst we are unable to work with Stan next season we may, of course, be able to agree a package with Ronnie. I will be talking with him over the next few days."
