Leysdown Carnival: Appeal for help ahead of procession
00:01, 27 July 2018
Organisers of Leysdown Carnival are appealing for help to get floats up and running in this year’s procession.
The annual event is due to take place tomorrow with stalls opening on The Spinney from 11am and the parade from 2pm until 4pm.
But a call to arms has been issued to lorry drivers who are needed to help pull floats that have been entered.
Everyone is due to assemble at Little Groves holiday park in Leysdown Road.
The road will be closed from the holiday park to the seafront promenade.
Mary Culver, one of those running the carnival, said: “We’ve got a lot more stalls this year with a better variety of goods on offer. We’ve also had a lot of interest in the parade but we’ve got a serious shortage of lorries to pull the floats.
“It’s unfortunate that I didn’t know some people didn’t have lorries for their floats.
“We’re hoping this year the carnival’s going to be stronger but the fate of the floats rests in the hands of generous lorry owners.”
Mary stressed how much the carnival meant to people, saying visitors secure caravans at holiday parks in the area to make sure they see the spectacular.
“It’s the weekend to be in Leysdown. People book up in advance to be here for the carnival,” she added.
“I think that if we didn’t have it, people would be upset and that’s why we want the community to get onboard with us and make it better and make it stronger.
“We’ve got more community interest in it now and there’s more community cohesion this year.
“It’s starting to get mentioned again. This year we’ve had to turn people who want stalls down because we have too many, so it’s really good that people are interested.”
