A giant scarf created by Sheppey Academy youngsters will be sent to Prime Minister David Cameron as part of a global campaign to get primary education for all children.
The tutor group Abbey 20, which is part of the Abbey School unit at the Minster Road site, is supporting 1Goal’s Send My Friend to School scheme, which this year is linked to the World Cup.
World leaders have promised that all children will have a primary education by 2015 but, with only five years left to go, there are still 72 million children missing out on an education completely.
The tutor group, which is made up of students from Years 7 to 11, decided to help by joining this year’s action to remind world leaders of their commitment and each made a section of the scarf.
The scarf has been signed by many of the students and tutors in Abbey School and the scarf was also displayed at the recent Year 6 parents’ evening where many parents and children who will be joining the east site in September also signed it.
Abbey head teacher Jo Chester said: “Students have been discussing Human Rights and The UN 'Rights of the Child’ as part of family unit time and they have shown mature and sensitive understanding of a variety of issues, relating to young people, around the world.
“Abbey 20’s scarf is an example of how young people can have a voice about issues they feel strongly about.”
Tutor Fiona Louch added: “I am delighted that the group have all contributed . They are really pleased that at the end of the World Cup, the scarf will be sent to the Prime Minister. ”
