Ambulance technician in the right place at the right time
09:05, 14 June 2010
A 32-year-old man from Sittingbourne is recovering well in hospital after receiving life-saving treatment from an ambulance technician.
William Bellamy was first to arrive at the scene after South East Coast Ambulance Service was called to an address in the town at 11.55am on Sunday.
The man was complaining of severe chest pain but it was while Will was using a defibrillator to establish the rhythm of the patient's heart that he suffered a heart attack.
Will, who has attended 15 cardiac arrests during his five-year career and successfully revived another patient three weeks ago, said: "This really wasn't what I expected when I first arrived to treat the patient. Here was a normally fit and healthy person and, although he was in some pain, did not strike me as someone who was about to go into cardiac arrest. However, that is exactly what happened.
"It was fortunate that I had the pads on his chest at the time because it allowed me to deliver a shock which brought him back.
"I then carried out chest compressions for a further two minutes and within 10 minutes he was conscious again."
Kent Air Ambulance was called and the man was flown to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford for further treatment.
Will added: "I am absolutely delighted with the outcome of this patient who is recovering well."
