There's plenty of chances to discover some hidden gems across the county this weekend as Heritage Open Days runs into its second week.

The annual event, which runs until Sunday, September 20, brings history and culture to all - and a chance to visit for free - thanks to support from the National Trust and the People’s Postcode Lottery, and this year has the theme Hidden Nature.

This year, there are extra safety measures at sites and some also require booking in advance to control visitor numbers.

There are some 65 days out to try, as well as some online sights to see.

Here's just a taste of some of the weekend's highlights:

Shorncliffe Garrison - 200 years of history

Learn about the military history on site and explore the scenery, as some of the area has also been reclaimed by nature.

The Shorncliffe Trust will be running guided tours on Saturday, September 19 at 11am and 2pm (Sundays are fully booked). You must book in advance by contacting Susan Law on 01278 662084

A guided walk of Allington Lock

The walk will take you along the banks of the River Medway from Allington Lock to Maidstone from 10am to 12.30pm on Friday, September 18, taking in riverside sights. Book by contacting Derek Whitehead on 03000 414842 or emailing derek.whitehead@kent.gov.uk

Sandwich Medieval Centre

Re-enactors will be demonstrating some medieval crafts and trades at the centre in The Quay, Sandwich, such as blacksmithing, wood working, baking and calligraphy. There's no need to book to

see them in action between 10am and 4pm each day from Thursday, September 17 to Sunday, September 20.
